Winter & Roofs - We've Got you covered!

As you rush to break out your warm coats, insulated boots, and snow tires for this fast approaching winter, you should also take into consideration the effects this intense season can have on your home.

It’s important to know how to spot and catch damages before they escalate and end up costing you in repairs, high energy bills and overall discomfort in your home. We’re here to talk about the most common ways our harsh midwestern winters can cause damage to your roofing, especially if your roof is on its last legs.

Moisture is always in the air and will find its way into just about anything it can. It’s one heck of a monster during the winter months when you consider all of the forms it shows up in including ice, snow, freezing rain, condensation and just plain water from when everything starts to melt. When the temperature drops, water molecules start to expand and cause a buildup of pressure. When you consider the accumulation of rain, ice and snow on rooftops, you begin to see the signs of water expansion through roofing damage. Roofing materials aren’t designed to be flexible and malleable so water can seep beneath and expand. Over time, the freeze and thaw cycle can put significant stress on your shingles and can cause lasting damage/deterioration. If your shingles and flashing are damaged, what is preventing the water from going directly into your home? Especially if Ice Dams develop.

Ice Dams are created when snow piles up on your rooftop and freezes. It quite literally creates a dam along your roofline and gutters. The heat from within your home combined with changing outdoor temperatures will inevitably cause the snow to melt. These dams prevent that melting snow from reaching your gutters, thus preventing it from safely draining off of your roof. This results in water backup that can leak into your home, causing water to pool and will likely damage the interior. There’s also the risk of mold growth, mildew and rot. The dams can even become heavy enough to rip your gutters clean off. Yikes!

Older roofs are more susceptible to the possibility of structural damage due to heavy snow buildup. If your roof is old or not up to code, this structural damage can eventually cause your roof to cave in. Windborne debris like tree branches or loose outdoor furniture can hit your roof, adding to the damage. Getting an inspection before it’s too late can lower the risk of costly repairs and, more importantly, keep your loved ones safe.

Avoid damage from one of the harshest winters in the country by scheduling a free, no obligation inspection and consultation with us today. One of our roofing specialists will come out and do a thorough inspection of your home and let you know if you have any damage. If you do, we’ll help guide you through the next steps and go over all of the options we have to help.
