Winter Roofing Woes

As you are checking your inventory of gear to make sure you are prepared for the winter months, it might be worth making sure your roof is prepared for the harsh winter season, too. It’s important to know how to spot and catch signs of damage early in order to avoid more costly repairs. Let’s talk about the most common ways midwestern winters can lead to some winter roofing woes and what to look out for.

Moisture

Even minor amounts of moisture build-up can lead to damage. When the temperature drops, water molecules start to expand and cause a buildup of pressure. This pressure puts significant stress on shingles through freeze and thaw cycles consequently causing damage and deterioration. When shingles and flashing are damaged, the protective barrier for your roof is compromised and water can gain entry to your home.

Wind

March is one of Minnesota’s most windy months of the year. During strong wind storms, it is not uncommon for shingles to be loosened, broken, or torn off. Sharp winter winds can also tear or loosen flashing. This damage, followed by the average one or two major blizzards throughout late March and April, can lead to big repairs. Make sure to check the wind rating of your shingles to better understand how your roof may be holding up to windy days.

Ice Dams

Perhaps the most woeful of the winter roofing woes, ice dams can lead to some significant damages and costly repairs. Poor ventilation in a home, particularly those with attics, can lead to the heat escaping only through the top part of a roof rather than evenly throughout. This leads to melting snow and ice running down the roof edge and accumulating into large blocks of frozen ice called Ice Dams. These dams block water from being able to flow into the gutters and drain off the roof.

If not removed, these dams continue to accumulate throughout the winter. Sitting water from lack of runoff and the weight of the ice puts pressure on shingles and gutters. This can cause them to crack, break, or buckle if left unchecked even for one season.

Heavy Snowfall

As the heavy snowfall of the midwest accumulates on your roof throughout winter, it can create pathways for water to seep into your home. You may start to notice signs of water damage in your home, such as ceiling leaks and water stains. These issues may indicate that your roof is compromised, allowing melted snow to penetrate your home.

One of the most apparent signs that your roof is under stress from heavy snow is visible sagging or bowing. If you notice any unusual dips or curves in your roofline, it’s a clear indicator that the snow load is exceeding the structural capacity of your roof. Immediate action is required to prevent further damage, such as a roof collapse.

How to Prepare

Older roofs are more susceptible to the possibility of structural damage during the winter due to overall wear and tear with age. Getting an inspection before it’s too late can lower the risk of costly repairs and, more importantly, keep your loved ones safe.
