7 Signs it's time to replace your windows

Knowing when it’s time to replace your windows can be difficult to determine if you are not in the window business — that’s why we make it our business! Signs of window wear can range from minimal to extreme, which is why it’s not always easy to tell if you are in need of replacement windows or not. Couple that with the fact that most people who have spent ample time in the Midwest are used to a drafty window or two and neglected windows become commonplace quickly.

Here are seven signs that it might be time to invest in new windows for your home.

Your windows are drafty

Broken window seals, rotting frames, and poor window installation are all likely culprits contributing to a drafty window, but one of the most common causes of leaky/drafty windows is that they are just plain old. Traditional window materials like single-pane/double pane glass can lack insulation and do a poor job of keeping out the cold air and excessive heat. Most modern day energy efficient windows have superior insulation and contain gasses to fill the space between panes.

One thing we know for sure about our Midwest Climate is that it can be extreme. Older windows that are not energy efficient can affect your home, comfort, and wallet in more ways than you think. Winter can mean feeling freezing cold under your cozy blanket even when the thermostat is at 70 degrees. The inside surface of an inefficient window is cold and can actually pull heat away from your body. On the other hand, drafty windows in the summer months can mean feeling like you’re stuck in a sauna with no escape from the humidity. These older/damaged energy inefficient windows can allow around 75% of the sun’s heat into your home. Upgrading to energy efficient windows can save you a lot of money and a lot of discomfort.

Costly Energy Bills

As we mentioned before, windows that aren’t energy efficient can have a big impact on your wallet. Upgrading your windows can mean reducing your heating and cooling costs by an average of 12%. This can also reduce the amount of stress that is put on your HVAC system and you’ll likely save money on maintenance and repair.

Your windows are difficult to operate

Fighting with the functionality of your windows is a big indicator that it’s time to consider upgrading them. Faulty windows contribute directly to skyrocketing energy bills and can create serious safety issues. Windows that are visibly damaged, do not lock or close well, or are beginning to rot are not only a hassle but could increase the risk of your home being targeted by an intruder. Windows that slam shut unexpectedly could cause bodily harm to whoever is operating them and can even cause additional damage to the rest of the window. The inability to open or close them could become a liability if you are put in the position of needing to make a hasty escape. Replacing them could mean increasing the security of your entire home and all the precious ones who live in it.

Excessive Condensation

Condensation that appears occasionally as fog on windows and glass surfaces is usually completely normal and nothing to be concerned about. However, excessive window condensation can result in frost build-up, peeling paint and the presence of mold or moisture patches on ceilings/walls. This can create an unsafe environment for the inhabitants of your home and could cause extensive damage to the home itself. Upgrading to energy efficient windows will eliminate excessive condensation and you’ll be able to enjoy the view no matter the season.

Fade Damage

Harsh UV rays can sneak through inefficient windows and damage your furnishings, floors, and belongings over time.  Energy Star certified windows have coatings that act like a sunscreen for your house. These coatings can cut transmission of damaging UV rays into the house by 75%. Don’t let that invasive sun destroy your valuable belongings.

Outdated Look

If your windows are looking worn down, outdated and aren’t as aesthetically pleasing as they used to be, it might be a great time to explore enhancing your home’s facade. New energy efficient windows can completely transform your home from the inside out. If this is your forever home, you’ll be able to save money on your energy bills, sit comfortably in a temperature controlled home and know that everyone (especially you) will be admiring the outside of your home for years to come. If you are looking to increase the property value of your home to eventually sell, energy efficient windows could increase the market value of your house by thousands and thousands of dollars. First impressions matter and upgrading your windows will beautify your home and increase curb appeal.

Lack of Soundproofing

Are you starting to notice that you can hear traffic, construction, neighborhood dogs and passersby from inside your home? It sounds like your current windows are not sufficiently insulated and that it’s about time for you to enjoy your peace and quiet again. You don’t have to live by a freeway to be annoyed by outside noise. Energy efficient windows will help reduce the sound of your neighbor’s leaf blower at 5 AM so you can truly take your time on those lazy Sunday mornings.
